CONW Endowed Scholarshipat The University of Akron
In the 1970s, the City of Akron razed many homes as part of its urban renewal program. One of them was located on Wooster Avenue and had been owned by the CONW since 1941. It had offered safe, affordable housing to generations of single African-American women attending The University of Akron, who were either not welcome at whites-only hotels or not affluent enough to afford other types of lodging. The city paid the CONW $17,648 for the house – and that money was used to create our endowed scholarship. Careful stewardship has maintained and grown those funds, allowing us to award more than $82,000 in scholarship money to women of color studying at The University of Akron since 1982.
